What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is an official document translation accompanied by a signed affidavit from a qualified translator attesting to accuracy and completeness. The translator must be competent in both source and target languages. It differs from standard translation in that it must be word-for-word, literal, and cannot include interpretive content. Certified translations are accepted by government agencies, courts, universities, and immigration authorities like USCIS.

How much do certified translation services cost?

Certified translation services typically range from $24.95 to $30 per page, though some providers charge by word count ($0.05–$0.15/word). Pricing varies based on language complexity, document type, turnaround time, and optional add-ons like notarization ($15–$25), expedited processing ($10–$15/page), and apostille certification ($80). Rush services and same-day delivery incur premium fees. Get quotes from multiple providers to compare pricing.

How long does certified translation take?

Standard certified translation turnaround is typically 24–48 hours from submission. Many providers offer expedited services reducing this by 50%, delivering translations in 2–4 hours. Same-day and rush options are available for additional fees. Turnaround depends on document length, language complexity, and current workload. For online certified translation services, turnaround times start immediately upon upload and payment.

Are certified translations accepted by USCIS?

Yes, certified translations are accepted by USCIS provided they meet specific requirements: a word-for-word translation, translator's original signature, a signed certification statement on company letterhead attesting to accuracy, and translator contact information. USCIS does not recognize machine translations or unsigned translations. Use a certified translator accredited by the American Translators Association (ATA) to ensure USCIS acceptance.

What documents require certified translation?

Common documents requiring certified document translation include birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas, academic transcripts, driver's licenses, vaccination records, medical records, bank statements, divorce decrees, and court documents. Immigration applications (USCIS forms), visa applications, university admissions, legal proceedings, and business compliance often mandate certification. Contact the specific agency or institution to confirm requirements.

Do certified translation services offer notarization?

Yes, most professional certified translation companies offer notarization as an optional add-on. Notarization adds a notary public's signature and seal to the certification, providing extra authenticity. Some agencies include notarization automatically; others charge $15–$25 extra. Notarization is often required by specific institutions or countries. E-Apostille (Hague Convention certification) is also available from many providers for international use, typically costing $80–$100 additional.

How do I choose the best certified translation service?

Select a certified translation company based on: ATA accreditation or similar credentials, transparent pricing without hidden fees, guaranteed USCIS or institution acceptance, 24-hour turnaround minimum, available languages matching your needs, positive customer reviews, secure document handling, and responsive customer support. Verify that translators are qualified professionals, not automated systems. Request sample translations and confirm notarization/apostille options if needed.
